Our Formulations
What we make · And what we leave out
Rooted in ancestral wisdom.
Reimagined in Copenhagen.
What we leave out of our formulations is as deliberate as what we put in. Every decision is made with intention.
"For centuries, African women have embraced the power of pure plant oils to protect and rejuvenate skin — fostering health and radiance without unnecessary additives. Luyana honours this legacy."Our formulation philosophy
Formulated with restraint
What we leave out
is as intentional as what we include.
Every Luyana formulation begins with a philosophy shared by two seemingly distant worlds: the botanical traditions of Africa and the design principles of Scandinavia.
Both understand that more is not necessarily better.
Across generations, African families relied on a small number of trusted botanicals to nourish, protect, and restore the skin. In Copenhagen, we apply the same discipline to formulation itself — selecting only what serves a purpose and leaving behind what does not.
The result is skincare built around exceptional ingredients rather than unnecessary complexity. Thoughtfully composed, carefully balanced, and designed to allow every botanical to perform at its fullest potential.
Luxury is not excess.
It is discernment.
Less is more
Simplicity as
a deliberate discipline.
Many of Africa's most revered botanicals have never been single-purpose ingredients. Marula, baobab, moringa, shea, and kalahari melon have been used for generations because of their remarkable versatility and ability to support the skin in multiple ways at once.
We formulate according to the same principle.
Rather than building routines around numerous specialised products, we create formulations that work harmoniously with the skin and with one another. Every ingredient is selected for both its individual contribution and the role it plays within the whole.
The objective is not complexity. It is balance.
Because the most sophisticated formulations are often the ones that know when to stop.
Ancestral botanicals
Chosen because they have
always belonged.
The botanicals we use were not discovered in laboratories. They were passed from one generation to the next because they worked.
Across the continent, knowledge of plants was preserved through ritual, observation, and daily life. Mothers taught daughters. Grandmothers taught mothers. Certain botanicals became trusted companions not because they were fashionable, but because generations returned to them again and again.
Kigelia. Rooibos. Moringa. Baobab.
Each carries a history far older than modern skincare itself.
The question we ask in every formulation is simple: does this ingredient earn its place?
At Luyana, we draw from this inheritance with respect. Not to recreate the past, but to honour it. The botanicals we choose have earned their place through centuries of use, becoming part of the traditions and rituals that continue to endure today.
Our role is simply to listen carefully, formulate thoughtfully, and allow these ingredients to speak for themselves.
Skin intelligence
Working with the skin.
Not against it.
The skin does not need to be corrected. It needs to be understood.
Our philosophy is not built on correction, disruption, or excess. It is built on support. We believe the skin performs best when given what it needs and left with what it already understands.
For generations, African beauty rituals have embraced this principle. Plant oils were used to nourish, protect, and comfort the skin without overwhelming it. The goal was never to outsmart the skin, but to work in harmony with it.
Every Luyana formulation is designed with this same respect for the skin's natural intelligence. Nothing unnecessary. Nothing excessive. Only ingredients chosen to complement, support, and accompany the skin in what it already does remarkably well.
Beyond the formulation
A formulation this considered deserves packaging to match.
Every material we use to contain and ship a Luyana product is chosen with the same intention as the formulation itself.
